Vendor Member Spotlight
MIAMA Welcomes The Chemours Company as a 2019 MIAMA Full Membership Vendor Member. The National Hockey League and The Chemours Company, producer of Opteon™ refrigerants, have partnered together to provide sustainable refrigerant solutions for rinks across North America. Bringing more than 85 years of experience in innovation for the refrigeration industry, Chemours will work with the NHL and community rink owners and operators to identify cost-effective, sustainable alternatives, such as Opteon™ refrigerants which are non-ozone depleting and have a low global warming potential (GWP).
As part of the Montreal Protocol, production and use of broadly-used HCFC refrigerants will be phased out by 2020 and HFC refrigerants will be phased down by 2025 due to their high GWP. As many of the rinks in North America, particularly in the USA, currently use these refrigerants, the NHL and Chemours are committed to working with ice rinks owners and operators across North America to help them navigate the refrigerant landscape and identify cost-effective, safe, environmentally-preferable alternatives that make sense for them.
Through the NHL Greener Rinks Initiative, the NHL aspires to help rink owners and operators make sustainable business decisions for their aging community rinks. Doing so may help more rinks stay operational in the long term; ultimately leaving hockey a more enjoyable family experience for generations to come. Several factors need to be considered when selecting refrigerants and refrigeration systems to create the perfect sheet of ice in indoor ice arenas, including equipment age, installation and ongoing maintenance cost, safety, performance, and energy efficiency of the new fluid. The NHL’s partnership with Chemours and its Opteon™ family of low global warming refrigerants will help provide for more sustainable, cost-effective business solutions to ensure hockey thrives at all levels.
