The Albert Lea City Recreation Department is accepting applications for a full-time Arena/Aquatics Center Technician. Primary duties include performing maintenance and operations work at the City Arena and Aquatic Center; flooding and developing ice, painting lines, operating ice resurfacing, testing water and adding chemicals to swimming pool and general maintenance of equipment and grounds.
Examples of Duties
*Maintains and repairs arena, including preventative maintenance to ensure the arena is safe, well maintained and operating properly.
*Troubleshoots and performs a variety of maintenance duties including painting, carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical work, equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair, and grounds maintenance for the arena.
*Prepares and maintains ice surface for use including flooding and developing ice, painting lines, maintaining the proper temperature and operating ice resurfacing machines.
*Operates a variety of equipment including the tractor-mower, snowblower, forklift, scissor lift and ice maintenance equipment.
*Maintains and repairs the heating and cooling systems, changes lights, fuses and ballasts, and installs and repairs the sound system and electronic scoreboard.
*Performs maintenance of the Aquatic Center including running chlorine lines, testing water and adding chemicals, repairing and/or replacing pumps and replacing or backwashing the filters, repairs and replaces valves, filling and emptying the pools and performing opening and closing maintenance operations.
*Maintains and inventory of supplies, materials and parts and requests/orders replacement as needed.
*Ensures the arena is set up for special events including moving bleachers, setting up and running the electrical, installing and taking down glass and boards, and installing the artificial grass for the soccer field.
*Assist with janitorial duties as needed in locker rooms, arena lobby, bleachers, restrooms, and arena grounds.
*Maintains accurate records as required; such as chlorine, PH, CO2 levels, refrigeration oil and pressures.
Work with outside contractors as needed.
Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
Ideal candidates would have previous experience in the building, facility and grounds maintenance with ice arena maintenance and recreation facility equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid class state driver’s license and the ability to obtain an AFO/CFO pool certificate within six months of hire.
This position will be regularly required to work nights/weekends during the winter months for all operations and services of the City Arena and weekends during the summer months for Aquatic Center maintenance and operations.
*Considerable knowledge of the materials, equipment, and tools used in the cleaning and maintenance of an arena and aquatic facility, including the use of power tools.
*Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and methods related to maintenance, repair and operation arena facilities, vehicles, and equipment including maintenance of ice sheets and refrigeration equipment.
*Considerable knowledge of the principals, practices and methods used to properly maintain and repair aquatic facilities and equipment, and to test and treat pool water in accordance with health and industry standards.
*Considerable knowledge of the safe handling and storage of hazardous materials used in arena and pool operations.
*Working knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, electricity, hydraulics, and grounds maintenance.
*Working knowledge of state and local laws, ordinances, and building and health codes related to arena and pool operation and management.
*Considerable skill in trouble-shooting mechanical and maintenance problems and developing and executing a preventative maintenance plan.
*Considerable ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with equipment and supply vendors, local media, contractors, city staff, elected officials, and the general public.
*Considerable ability to safely maintain and repair arena equipment, buildings, and grounds.
*Considerable ability to work independently, prioritize work, and analyze mechanical and maintenance problems to determine an appropriate solution.
*Considerable ability to routinely stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, push, pull, twist, turn, perform repetitive movements and work in confined spaces and at considerable heights while performing maintenance on buildings, pools and equipment.
*Considerable ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
*Considerable ability to lift and carry boxes and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
*Considerable ability to work with exposure to loud noises.
*Considerable ability to operate various types of equipment used in arena and pool maintenance.
*Considerable ability to have good vision – including day, night and color vision – to have good hearing and a sense of touch and smell.
*Considerable ability to use both fine and large motor skills during the performance of this job.
*Working ability to work with some exposure to fumes and hazardous chemicals.
