Tell us how you got into the industry?
I started when I was in High School working for Steve Olson at the Litchfield Civic Arena. He gave me the opportunity to learn from him and a great group of staff.
How many years have you been in the ice arena industry?
What is the best part about working in an ice arena?
Every day is a bit different, but that allows you to figure out those challenges which can be very rewarding.
Using one word, name one thing you love about working at a rink?
Nobody’s perfect in this industry. Tell us your worst experience at a rink so far?
Getting a call in the middle of winter that there is an ammonia leak outside of the rink. Fortunately enough, we didn’t lose any ice mainly due to the weather staying in the negative digits all week long.
What are the first three things you do when you get to the rink each day?
Greet my co-workers, walk the rink and check/return emails and phone calls.
How do you feel ongoing professional development is helping you and your career?
Meeting with other rink professionals and vendors in the industry through MIAMA is a great opportunity to continue to grow and learn. There is always something to learn whether it’s from people that are still in the industry or retired. I look forward to MIAMA conferences because this gives me the chance to accomplish this.
How would you explain to the average hockey parent how the ice resurfacer works to resurface the ice?
When the ice resurfacer drives onto the ice, there is more to it than driving in circles. I typically show coaches, parents and kids the parts of the resurfacer and how they all tie in together to give a great sheet of ice.
Who would you like to acknowledge for helping (mentoring) you along the way?
I would like to thank Steve Olson, Joe Meierhofer, Todd Bissett, Mark Vaughan, Zac Dockter and countless others from the facilities that I have worked for in the past. Without their help and guidance along the way, I wouldn’t be where I am at today.
