Tell us how you got into the industry?

I was hired as the Ice Arena Coordinator right after my final internship with the City of Eden Prairie.

How many years have you been in the ice arena industry?

What is the best part about working in an ice arena?

For me working with people that take joy in the profession that I have chosen. When people come to our building, (employees or patrons) they want to be there, we have an immediate connection.

Using one word, name one thing you love about working at a rink?

Nobody’s perfect in this industry. Tell us your worst experience at a rink so far?

It is a tossup between the Zamboni hitting the boards during a HS game causing them to bend or the power going out while groups are on the ice.

What are the first three things you do when you get to the rink each day?

Check in with my Assistant Manager, make a lap around the rink, check email.

How do you feel ongoing professional development is helping you and your career?

It’s made me who I am today, I am a better leader because of professional development.

How would you explain to the average hockey parent how the ice resurfacer works to resurface the ice?

There is a very sharp blade under the big black thing on the back of the Zamboni, all the snow then meets with an auger that brings the snow to the middle of the Zamboni, it then goes up another auger and shoots it into the big hopper. Finally you see the hot water being applied behind the Zamboni to make the ice surface smooth again.

Who would you like to acknowledge for helping (mentoring) you along the way?

When I landed my first job, I didn’t have a lot of experience so participating at MIAMA events and visiting different ice arenas and talking with various staff helped me learn a little more of the stuff they don’t teach you on your first tour of the building. Dean Mulso, Craig Flor, Walt Bruley, Jeff Horstman, Mike Bauer, Jon Balvance, and of course John Cole.

What is the best tip you have learned from any of the classes offered through MIAMA?

In all the classes I have taken the common theme has been to get involved, ask questions and take a chance.
