Tell us how you got into the industry?
In the early 1980’s I was the Ice Arena Manager in Albert Lea and that position jump started my career in the public sector. Throughout my career I stayed coachable and had several mentors believe in me and help me continue to grow into city government leadership.

How many years have you been in the recreation industry?
It will be 40 years in the public sector this coming February 2016.
Enjoy it. It goes very fast.

What is the best part about working in the recreation industry?
The best part about working in the recreation industry is providing public space for so many people to enjoy. It is humbling to drive by facilities and community parks that were once just a vision but now are realities for the community at large to enjoy.

Using one word, name one thing you love about working at a community center?
Buzz

What are the first three things you do when you get to the community center each day?
I am a man of habit and self-discipline so the first thing I do each morning is spend time in prayer followed by a cardio workout at the Maple Grove Life Time Fitness. When I get to my office I have a system I use that helps me stay accountable to my daily/monthly/annual calendar.

How do you feel ongoing professional development is helping you and your career?
I do a lot of reading about the changing industry and I attend NRPA meetings. I also trust my staff for latest trends and their networking efforts.

How would you explain to the average hockey parent how the ice resurfacer works to resurface the ice?
For ease of explanation, I’d tell them it shaves and shines.

Who would you like to acknowledge for helping (mentoring) you along the way?
Mom and Dad, Gene Sack, Frank Rog, Pat Hoffman, Paul Kinder, Tim Phenow and Fred Christiansen

What is the best tip you have learned from any of the classes offered through MIAMA?
Build a great staff and then trust them.
